ASSESSMENT OF BREASTFEEDING PROMOTION AMONG WOMEN OF CHILDBEARING AGE IN IGUOMO COMMUNITY, OVIA NORTH EAST LGA EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

Breastfeeding promotion refers to coordinated activities and policies to promote health among women, newborns and infants through breastfeeding. The main objective of this study is to assess the level of breastfeeding promotion in Iguomo community, Ovia North East LGA. A descriptive survey is used for this study. The populations under study consist of 50 workers in Iguomo community. The research was for two weeks and an estimated number of 50 workers was the population size. The sampling technique used was convenient sampling technique and sample size was 40 working mothers. The information gotten from the questionnaire was analyzed using descriptive statistics, which were presented in tables and figures. Statistical package SPSS 17 was used to find relationship between variables. Pearson’s chi square at 0.005 level of significance was used for inferential analyses. It is therefore concluded that the level of knowledge of breastfeeding knowledge among these workers on the subject matter is high. Practice however low owes to time constraints, maintenance of breast shape, pains on breastfeeding and health of the mothers. The practice of exclusive breastfeeding by mothers can be increased if the facilitators discussed above can be put in place to make exclusive breastfeeding interesting for the mothers.
