A STUDY ON COVID-19 VACCINE: THE AWARENESS, KNOWLEDGE, PERCEPTION AND DETERMINANTS OF ITS CHOICE AMONG THE PEOPLE OF NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

Introduction: COVID-19 is a zoonotic disease believed to have been passed from bats to other animals like snakes and pangolins and then to human. The aim of the study is to access level of awareness, knowledge, perception and determinants of choice of COVID-19 vaccine in Okada community, Edo state, Nigeria.

Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional study design was adopted for this study. A cluster sampling technique was used to select respondents for this study. A sample of 323 was adopted. A well-structured questionnaire was used.

Results: It was revealed that Majority, 250 (77.4%) of the respondents were Christians. All most of the respondent Two hundred and ninety-seven (92.0%) believed COVID-19 was preventable. All (100.0%) of Bankers believed in the existence of COVID-19 in Nigeria. Most 291 (90.1%) of the respondents were aware of the COVID-19 vaccine. From All, 13 (100.0%) of Pharmacist were willing to receive the Vaccine if Priest/ Bishops/ Pastors/ Imams/ other clerics assured them of its safety and effectiveness while 9 (42.9%) of Lecturers were willing to receive the Vaccine if Priest/ Bishops/ Pastors/ Imams/ other clerics assured them of its safety and effectiveness and the association was statistically significant (p = 0.001).

Conclusion: In conclusion, majority of the people living in Okada Community are aware and knowledgeable on the existence of COVID-19 in Nigeria, this showed that they believed that COVID-19 is real and not some propaganda by the Nigerian government. These factors greatly determined the choice of receiving COVID-19 vaccine and its acceptance as the main preventive measure against COVID-19 in the Okada Community.

Government should ensure transparency in the report of Cases of individuals whom had tested positive to the SARS-CoV-2, this will increase trust in government and ensure efficient COVID-19 vaccination.
